## A Guide To Branding Terms

 5 Oct 2026

To help you navigate your next branding project with total confidence, here is your quick reference guide to the essential design terms used in the UK creative industry today.

**![Fundamentals-Brand-v-Logo\_1920x1080px](https://blog.thinkplusink.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Fundamentals-Brand-v-Logo_1920x1080px.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&name=Fundamentals-Brand-v-Logo_1920x1080px.jpg)**

**1. The Fundamentals: Branding vs. Logo**
One of the most common misconceptions we encounter is that a "logo" and a "brand" are the same thing. In reality, they are two very different components.

- **Logo:** This is the "face" of your company. It is a singular mark, icon, or wordmark that identifies you.
- **Brand Identity:** This is the "soul" of your company. It includes your logo, but also your colour palette, typography, tone of voice, and the "vibe" customers feel when they interact with you.
- **Brand Guidelines:** Often called a "Brand Bible," this is the rulebook we create to ensure your brandlooks the same on a business card as it does on a giant billboard.

#### ![Anatomy-of-Typography\_1920x1080px](https://blog.thinkplusink.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Anatomy-of-Typography_1920x1080px.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&name=Anatomy-of-Typography_1920x1080px.jpg)

2\. The Anatomy of TypographyTypography is about more than just picking a "pretty font." It’s about legibility and hierarchy.

- **Serif vs. Sans Serif:** Serif fonts have the little "feet" at the end of letter strokes (think *Times New Roman*). They feel traditional and trustworthy. Sans Serif fonts (like *Arial*) have no feet and feel modern and clean.
- **Kerning:** This is the adjustment of space between individual characters. Poor kerning can make a professional brand look amateurish overnight.
- **Hierarchy:** This refers to the arrangement of text to show importance. Your eyes should hit the Headline first, then the Sub-head, then the Body copy.

![Files-&-Formats\_1920x1080px](https://blog.thinkplusink.com/hs-fs/hubfs/Files-%26-Formats_1920x1080px.jpg?width=1920&height=1080&name=Files-%26-Formats_1920x1080px.jpg)

3\. Files, Formats, and Technical BitsThis is where things usually get the most confusing for small business owners. Have you ever tried to print a logo from your website and it came out blurry? Here is why.

- - **Vector vs. Raster:** **Vector** files (.AI, .EPS, .SVG) are the gold standard. They use mathematical paths, meaning you can scale them from a postage stamp to a skyscraper without losing any quality. **Raster** files (.JPG, .PNG) are made of pixels. If you stretch them, they get "crunchy" and pixelated.
    - **CMYK vs. RGB:** **CMYK** (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Key/Black) is for **printing**. **RGB** (Red, Green, Blue) is for **screens**.
*Tip:* Never send an RGB file to a professional printer, the colours will come out looking muddy!

4\. The Layout & Aesthetic

- **Negative Space (White Space):** This is the area of a design that is left empty. It isn’t "wasted" space, it’s what allows the important parts of your design to breathe.
- **The Grid:** All professional design agencies work is built on an invisible grid. It ensures alignment and balance, even if you can't see the lines.
- **Moodboard:** A collection of images, textures, and colours used at the start of a project to set the visual direction before the actual design work begins.

**FAQs: Your Design Questions Answered**
Q. How long does a typical brandidentity project take?A. Most comprehensive branding projects take between 4 to 8 weeks. This allows time for research, concept development, refinements, and the creation of your final asset library.

Q. Why can't I just use a free logo maker online?
A. Online makers use templates that thousands of other businesses use. Your brand deserves to be unique. Professional brand logo design ensures you own the intellectual property and have a mark that is strategically built for your specific target audience.

Q. What files will I receive at the end of the project?
A. At **Think Plus Ink Ltd**, we provide a full suite of files including high-resolution Vectors (for print and signage) and Web-ready files (for social media and your website).

Q. Can you refresh my existing logo without changing it completely?
A. Absolutely! This is called a "Brand Refresh." We take the elements that work and modernise the typography or colour palette to ensure you stay relevant in today’s market.

Q. Do I own the copyright to the designs?
A. Yes. Once the final invoice is settled, the full intellectual property rights for your final chosen identity are transferred to you.
